Louisiana pine snake (Pituophis ruthveni) - This harmless constrictor, native only the pine hills of eastern Texas and western Louisiana, is one of the rarest snakes in North America, if not the rarest. It is one of the few reptiles to be covered by an Species Survival Plan. Its habitat has been severely degraded by industrial logging and the snake has never recovered. In recent years radiotelemetry studies have been done on released individuals born in captivity to see how well they adapt to the wild.
